Das „Thomas-Arithmomètre“ ist die erste serienmäßig hergestellte Rechenmaschine der Welt. Mit ihr konnten neben Additionen und Subtraktionen auch durch fortgesetzte Addition bzw. Subtraktion Multiplikationen und Divisionen ausgeführt werden. Die Anleitung zum „Arithmomètre“ enthält auch eine Methode zum Wurzelziehen mit der Maschine. L. Payen hatte die Werkstatt von Thomas übernommen, produzierte aber zunächst weiter unter dem Namen von Thomas.
