Das amerikanische Unternehmen Apple hatte bis dato Computer hergestellt. 2007 stieg Apple mit dem iPhone in den Handymarkt ein und krempelte die ganze Branche um. Sie etablierten das Smartphone für Privatkunden. Im Vergleich zu den Modellen anderer Hersteller hatte das iPhone eine eher magere Ausgestattung: es hatte kein UMTS, kein GPS und auch keine Frontkamera. Aber es war mit einem vollwertigen Browser und E-Mail-Client sowie integriertem Musikplayer ausgestattet. Und: Das Gerät bediente man ausschließlich per Touchscreen. Das Handy-Design und das intuitive Apple-Betriebssystem machten das iPhone zum Verkaufsschlager.
